Web 2.0

The first task we got was to get to understand the meaning behind the Media.

Web 2.0 is the second stage generation of the World Wide Web. Web 2.0 came with the improved function to communicate more online. Over time, Web 2.0 has been used more as a marketing term rather than a computer-science based term. Things such as, blogs, social networking, and wikipages have been assets to the second generation of the World Wide Web.

Mediation – Mediation is the intervention between conflicting parties to settle upon a compromise.
Proliferation – Proliferation is a sudden increase in a number or an amount.
Saturation – Saturation within the media is a strategy for achieving maximum impact. This may include certain brands advertising their product more than average to try and bring it across more to the audience. For example, a retailer during a sale would have signs reading “sale” to make an impact to passersby or those who watch the adverts on TV.
Media Convergence - Media convergence is the convergences’ of many different types of mediums bringing together “the three C’s” –computing, communication and content.

Shared media is social media which is used to communicate and share information. If you share or tag a product or service you are, in a way, advertising them.

What is meant by “The Media”?

Media, or mass media, is the group of mediums used to bring across products, ideas and facts which together form “The Media”.  The Media such as newspapers, radio stations and television networks is a tool to construct and convey messages across the globe. The media target an audience, construct an idea or a message, and then disseminates it into society in order to achieve an end result. The end result being to sell the targeted audience a product, a service or an ideology.

Media is strictly regulated in countries like Burma, China and Ethiopia because their government wants to censor certain information from their government to maintain a control to avoid riots, in some ways this is a very paranoid and desperate measure to keep the illusion of safety.

Why are the media important in today's society?

Media is so important in today’s society because it connects us to the world and informs us about things like news, history, entertainment, music etc. The media updates us when we look at it. We have such things as the internet and if I use the most common search engine “Google.co.uk”, then I would reckon that nearly everyone will know what I was talking about. If you wanted to know something about music or the world news and you insert a few words and hit enter, within a few seconds you will be opened up to all of the information that you want. Yes, you can find lots of information but we have had the internet for so long that we have gained the ability for anyone to create their own blog and so bring across their thoughts and ideas to the world. Now, if you want to find certain facts, then you would have to search a lot to find what is and what is not true.

Although the media is extremely useful, the knowledge gained from it can become twisted and cease to be factual.

Knowing all of these terms will help me develop an understand of media and with it an understanding of the music industry. I believe that web 2.0 will help me throughout this coursework.
