From the
feedback from my audience research, I have found out that people prefer
to read Rock magazines as appose to Pop Punk magazines. Using this
knowledge, I have now changed my initial idea of a Pop Punk magazine to a Punk Rock magazine.
Because I changed it, I need to know the mise-en-scène for Rock so that I can present my photoshoot in a Punk Rock-y atmosphere.
Mise-en-scène is the arrangement of props on a stage, the direct translation from the french is literally 'Putting on stage'.
In context of music magazines, the mise-en-scène is the positioning, the lighting, the entire composition of the photo. The meaning behind everything in the image which represents underlying
messages which in this case will represent the genre of PUNK ROCK.
Punk Rock is obviously a sub genre of classic Rock so I first looked at the conventions of mise-en-scène within the Rock Genre.
Typical of the Rock Genre:
Typical of the Rock Genre:
- Black and White
- Tattoos
- Hard Light
- Rock Hands
- Crosses
- Black Clothing
- Long Hair
- Expression (Passion/Empty)
This is a photo from a photoshoot of the band Muse which make Rock/Space Rock/Alternative Rock.
The image is in black and white/Sepia.
Apart from one or two members of the band, it is quite a candid photo. This
is good because a photo like this would show the fans what the band
might be like when they are not in front a camera making everything less
formal and more friendly.
Their clothes are black and white, this is iconic to rock.

Here is another photo of the band Paramore. Again like the Muse photo, nearly everyone but the lead singer is looking at the camera, it is candid.
Generally the colours are dark. Dark background.
The men are bearded and the woman has bright coloured hair which is different to the norm.
There are tattoos.
He
is an edited photo for the band Canterbury. Nearly everyone is looking
down. This band is slightly more pop rock than rock but they still have
connotations of a rock band.
They have reasonably long hair, some have stretchers.
Here we have the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Black. White. Coloured Hair. Tattoos. Arm movements as if saying "What do you want". Direct Mode of Address. Hard light used.
