Shirt Colours

I did not like the colour of the shirt I thought it was too bright for a rock magazine, so I decided to put a layer on it as if wanting to colour pop. But instead of erasing the low saturation, I changed the hue and the brightness to create different coloured shirts. I then went to places where there were people in the age group of my target audience and asked them which colour they liked best and made a tally chart.

Blue

Original

Green/Yellow

Pinky/Blue
Purple/Yellow

Here are the results:

The majority of my audience preferred the blue shirt so I will change the shirt on the front cover to blue. This will also allow me to base a new, better house style to my magazine.

Front Cover Image - Audience Research

I showed 30 people in my age range which of 3 images would suit best as a front cover to a Rock Music Magazine. Here are the results:

1.        9                                 2.       21                                 3.        4

1) The shot was intended to be mocking of the pop culture, but most of the audience say that it was too "unrocky".

2) The second image was the majorities favourite. "Good stern looks"/"Empty faces"/"Typical of rock genre".

3) Main criticism: "Too smiley".

Front cover practice

Practiced editing out the background by using the same colour on the checked shirt.

Audience Profile

This is Helen Bargmann.
She is 18 year's old. She loves chilling with friends but it is difficult because she is currently in her last year at A-level in the sixth form, it is a very stressful time and so she needs to blow off steam by listening to music. This includes a variety of genres as well as sub-genres such as, Rock and it's hybrids - Alternative Rock, Punk Rock and Classic Rock.
Although times are tough she has a part time job and so can afford to pay a monthly price of under £5 to purchase music magazines.

The title of my magazine -revealed!

I had a short of list of names I was contemplating to use for my magazine. They were:

  • Rage
  • Strictly Punk
  • Distort
  • Discord
  • Crank
  • Forsaken

These are my results:

Crank and Rock Oasis were very close to one another. Not only did I choose to go with the majority but as I am not yet certain whether I am going into the Punk or Rock genre, Crank seems most neutral. Whereas Rock Oasis seems very well.. Rock.

Mise-en-scene Research

From the feedback from my audience research, I have found out that people prefer to read Rock magazines as appose to Pop Punk magazines. Using this knowledge, I have now changed my initial idea of a Pop Punk magazine to a Punk Rock magazine.

Because I changed it, I need to know the mise-en-scène for Rock so that I can present my photoshoot in a Punk Rock-y atmosphere.
Mise-en-scène is the arrangement of props on a stage, the direct translation from the french is literally 'Putting on stage'.
In context of music magazines, the mise-en-scène is the positioning, the lighting, the entire composition of the photo. The meaning behind everything in the image which represents underlying messages which in this case will represent the genre of PUNK ROCK.
Punk Rock is obviously a sub genre of classic Rock so I first looked at the conventions of mise-en-scène within the Rock Genre.
Typical of the Rock Genre:

  • Black and White
  • Tattoos
  • Hard Light
  • Rock Hands
  • Crosses
  • Black Clothing
  • Long Hair
  • Expression (Passion/Empty)
This is a photo from a photoshoot of the band Muse which make Rock/Space Rock/Alternative Rock.
The image is in black and white/Sepia.
Apart from one or two members of the band, it is quite a candid photo. This is good because a photo like this would show the fans what the band might be like when they are not in front a camera making everything less formal and more friendly.
Their clothes are black and white, this is iconic to rock.

Here is another photo of the band Paramore. Again like the Muse photo, nearly everyone but the lead singer is looking at the camera, it is candid.
Generally the colours are dark. Dark background.
The men are bearded and the woman has bright coloured hair which is different to the norm.
There are tattoos.

He is an edited photo for the band Canterbury. Nearly everyone is looking down. This band is slightly more pop rock than rock but they still have connotations of a rock band.
They have reasonably long hair, some have stretchers.

Here we have the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Black. White. Coloured Hair. Tattoos. Arm movements as if saying "What do you want". Direct Mode of Address.  Hard light used.

>Tell models to stand in direction of wind so hair is blown backwards – Tie up hair if it doesn’t ruin hairstyle
Rain damage (Equipment)
>Electrocution through damaged equipment
>Test equipment before use
> If wet – wait till dry before use
Cables/wires in the way
>Models/photographers trip over cables

Publishing Companies Research

I looked at two main companies which publishes magazines:

Bauer is a publishing company that produces music magazines (alongside others):

> MOJO
> Q
> Kerrang

And also the radio station:

> Absolute Radio
> Planet Rock

IPC is another publishing company. This company produces these music magazines among many others:

> NME
> UNCUT

Having researched various other publishing companies, I have decided to write an unofficial letter to the publishers of 'Bauer' to pitch my magazine to them. They have the better readership and I believe that the plan I have for my magazine will fit in will with their other music magazines.

Deconstruction #2

Here is a video of my deconstructing the Converge - KERRANG Magazine Front Cover:

(I have not yet learnt how to cut and trim videos so I have written in the annotations where I would've cut etc.)

I forgot to mention that every magazine is split into thirds and it's all called "The Rule of Thirds".

This is a usual usage of the rule of thirds in a music magazine. The top right corner uses up the image and the rest of the space is used for sublines/sub images etc.

Here we have the way Kerrang set out their thirds in this particular issue. You can see that the Rule Of Thirds doesn't apply. This could suggest that "Converge" are breaking apart from the norm for example.

My Magazine Research Task

Audience Research

I asked people to listen to some songs (without allowing them to watch the music video) and then answer some questions which will help me determine a house style.

The questions I am asking are:

1. What colours do you see when you hear the music?
2. What feelings do you think the music conveys?
3. What age group do you think the music appeals to?
4. What words stand out to you ( if there are lyrics ) ?
5. What words would you use to describe the music?

Song 1: Muse - Uprising

1. Blue, Black, Brown
2. Angry
3. 20 yr olds +
4. "Paranoid is in bloom", "Another Promise"
5. Bass guitar, classic, synth.

Song 2 : Muse - Undisclosed Desires

1. Black, yellow, red
2. Pleading, Sad, Misunderstood
3. 20 Year old +
4. "it's cold"
5. Synth

Song 3 : Patent Pending - The Way You Make Me Shake

1. Neon colours, black
2. Happy, desperate
3. Teens
4. "Best", "Keep me moving"
5. Anxiety, Boy band

From this research I now know that the house
style should contain the colours black and some
 other bright neon colours.
If I take the Punk/Alt/Rock genre,
then I should try and make it appeal to the target
audience of teens/young adult/16+.
Also the form of address should be quite
informal.

Mood board

Creating mood boards using PhotoShop and PowerPoint helped me find photos and colours and fonts for inspiration towards ideas going to my coursework.

Mood board #1 (using PowerPoint)

Mood board # 2 (Using PhotoShop)

These themes are very indie themed, and a bit alternative rock.
